correct sati is an automatic response that emerges from a practice of self awareness.
to achieve correct sati we must first develop a practice of observing the mind and body in order to become aware of all the various mental and emotional states that are constantly arising and falling within us.
as we cultivate our awareness practice the mind learns how to be aware of the present moment rather than consumed by it and starts to see the truth of the impermanence of all things (including awareness).
sati practice is not meditation as most westerners understand it. is not about calming the mind or holding it still. correct sati begins by observing the natural movement of the mind and getting familar with its antics.
sati practice helps us:
develop a stable mind inside a chaotic world
reduce the amount of time we spend in negative, painful mind states
make more empowered choices in our actions, words, and deeds
move through our lives with greater clarity and more compassion for ourselves, each other, and the world
see the truth of how (and which) mental forces are operating within us at any given time
open our heart
as our sati practice develops it becomes automatic and without intention. at this point the mind begins to cultivate vipassana. in vipassana, the mind begins to see with insight (or ‘wisdom’). in buddhism, insight practice refers to when the mind has enough stability to see all mental and physical phenomena as they truly are. insight practice is what sets the mind on the path towards freedom from all suffering. to learn more about my teacher, Jess Koffman, visit his site.
